Biography
Mary Bischoping is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Emerging Threats. Previously, Bischoping served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asia for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Prior to this, she was the Senior Counsel and Subcommittee Staff Director to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, where she led the South and Central Asia Subcommittee. In that capacity, she served as the lead advisor on the region to the Chairman and the Subcommittee Chairman. Mary also led the Foreign Affairs Committee’s oversight investigation into the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Prior to her role on the Committee, Mary served as Attorney-Adviser in the State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser. Before that, Mary served as a law clerk to the Honorable Kent A. Jordan on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and practiced law in the New York offices of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.
Mary holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Mary is fluent in Dari and German.
